Speaking up

People first - Speaking up 

 Light, upbeat music plays and continues throughout the video. 



 Aron is sitting on his couch in his apartment, he has a board game on the coffee table in front of him. 



 "It is important to speak up for yourself. Speaking up is about using your voice to make a choice or have your say." 



 Aron gets up from the couch and opens his front door. Aron’s friend Dan is at standing at the door, holding an umbrella as it’s raining outside. 



 "It's about letting other people know what you need." 



: Aron and his friend are smiling as they greet each other with a hug. 



 Aron’s friend has his hand to his head as he thinks about his next move. Camera pans out to show Aron and his friend sitting next to each other on the couch playing the board game. Aron takes his turn and flips down the last card. 



 Aron and his friend are sitting beside each other on the couch, Aron looks at his friend and smiles. 



 "I'm feeling a bit hungry are you? So I reckon we could go to our favourite cafe for lunch?" 



 Aron and his friend look at each other as they discuss which café to go to. 



 - "No, they weren't good to me there." 



 - "Oh, weren't they? There is this other place where the staff are real nice. Do you wanna go to that one?" 



 - "That sounds good. Thank you for listening to me." 



 Aron and his friend get up from the couch and walk towards the door. Aron’s friend picks up his umbrella and opens it as they leave the house. They both shelter under the umbrella as they go outside. 



 "Aaron spoke up for himself and let his friend know how he was feeling. This is called self-advocacy." 



 Aron and his friend sit down at a table in the café. The waitress smiles and puts some water and menus on the table for them both. 



 "Self-advocacy is when you make decisions for yourself and you tell people about the decisions you've made."



 - "Cool. I'll order us a couple of coffees, aye?" 



 Aron’s friend signals to the waitress that they are ready to order. 



 Aron looks at his friend. The waitress walks over to the table to take their order. 



 Aron and his friend are sitting at the table as the waitress stands beside them. Other customers are in the background. 



 "To get what you want, you have to make a choice."



 "It is okay for someone to help you choose," 



 Waitress steams milk at the coffee machine. 



 "but if someone is helping you, they must not make the choice for you." 



 Waitress delivers the drinks to the table that Aron and his friend are sitting at. 



 "I've been at my job nearly 14 years. I know my job inside out. One day at work, I told someone to do something, but they didn't listen to my instructions, so, I had to tell the boss. It made me really angry when they didn't listen to my instructions. His response was: "Ah, yes, I'll tell them off, and then when we'll go from there." It made me feel good standing up for myself, and it was fantastic. Anything in life, you've got to stand up for yourself, be true to yourself and be honest to yourself. And then you'll get anywhere in life. They're happy, I'm happy, happy days." 



 "When you say what you want, it's called speaking up. Speaking up is about having your say."
